We left Thursday morning from Ft Lauderdale. It was only a 2 hour flight to Haiti. I found Port Au Prince in much better condition than my last visit. The streets are passable and people seemed to move with purpose.
Our drive to the village of Morisseau was only 3.5 hours. Normally, it takes close to five. The roads are much improved. People drive crazy and dangerous compared to America but there seems to be a rhythm to the chaos that works for them. We stopped at a modern supermarket similar to any Publix.
Upon arrival to LaGuerre’s home we were welcomed by Pastor Ezra and a small group of older ladies dressed in their Sunday best. I call them the “hat” crowd because they all wear Sunday going to meeting hats.
After a quick dinner we had a small service in front of LaGuerre’s home. Several others came to join us. It was very nice and felt genuine.
After service we sat in lawn chairs talking for a few hours while looking at stars so close you could reach out and touch them. It was very peaceful and relaxing. LaGuerre’s home is the ultimate mission base. They make everyone feel welcome.
Friday we went to the school and photographed each student for sponsorships. They are all adorable. I have attached a few for verification. We then met with the teachers and the principal. We asked their input on how the school was doing. They mentioned a few needs but overall the school is doing very well. We have a great team leading the school.
Needs discussed were uniforms, space and student materials. The uniforms they have now are a couple years old. Our idea is to provide the material for them to pay the locals to make uniforms for next year. This helps put money back into the local economy while helping to create a sense of affinity for the school. Providing uniforms to our students gives them a sense of camaraderie and identity. They love wearing their uniform.
Next year the school will outgrow their space. We would like to add another grade. Privately, we discussed building a second floor. We will consider costs and review this further. Hopefully the child sponsorships will allow us to consider not only next year but further down the road also. One small step at a time.
I have asked Dieufaite to obtain the needed books and supplies for the students needing them.
They all said providing food has made a tremendous difference in attendance and test scores.
They started with three days of school and found attendance was much lower on days food was not served. Keep in mind for most of the children this is the best meal they will have all day. Learning is difficult when you are hungry.
I have made an executive decision to immediately begin serving food every day. Another positive note is a few parents have stepped up to cook the meals.
Friday afternoon we met with the church staff and pastor. We were pleased they have a men’s ministry with about 15 meeting every Tuesday for Bible study and encouragement. We discussed how we could help them with methods and material.
Saturday we took our translator back home to Jacmel. It is about 2 hours from LaGuerre’s home and 3 hours from Port Au Prince. We stay at an adoption agency guest house on Saturday evening. The view overlooking Port Au Prince was nice. You could hear the sounds of the city on a Saturday night. It was interesting.
We flew back Sunday morning weary but all agreed it was a very successful trip.
